Trial of a former accountant with Chevron Nigeria Ltd., Michael Adenuga, accused of fraudulent conversion of a property worth N5 billion has been fixed for June 15 by an Ikeja High Court.
The date by the trial Judge, Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya was sequel to a request by the prosecution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that the matter be adjourned to enable them serve the defence with an additional proof of evidence.
Expectedly, the prosecution was to open trial, Wednesday, however, the EFCC counsel, Emmanuel Jackson notified the court that
there were some vital documents which the prosecution intended to add to the charge to enhance its case.
Lawyers representing the defence led by Mr Muiz Banire and Mr Ehis Agboga did not oppose the prosecution’s application to serve the additional evidence as well as the adjournment.
The defendant, Adenuga and his company, Covenant Apartment Complex Ltd. were charged on a three-count offences of Stealing, forgery and use of false documents.
The anti graft agency alleged that between September 2011 and February 2008, the defendants fraudulently converted to their own use, a land measuring about 22.68 hectares.
It alleged that the property, situated at Ayetoro Ikota, in Lekki area of Lagos, was jointly owned by Covenant Sugarland Property Development Ltd., and Messrs Sunday and Joseph Oyeniran.
The defendants, according to the EFCC were said to have forged a document titled,” Contract of Sale between Covenant Apartment Ltd. and Kingview Realty Ltd., to facilitate the theft, which was allegedly presented by Adenuga to one of the EFCC officers, Mr James Buzugbe, as genuine.
The commission said the defendant’s alleged offences contravened Sections 278 (1) and 285 (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011
