A tricycle rider who spoke on condition of anonymity told Crime Guard that “they wanted to remove the chairman from the park, but the chairman refused which resulted to the fight. On the first day, the thugs came out and started breaking bottles, damaging tricycles and causing trouble. People were running helter-skelter amidst rampage and looting of people’s stores. Other boys tried to prevent them from entering into the streets but they started throwing bottles at them.
Area boys in the streets came out to stop them and serious fighting ensued. When one of them brought out a matchet, the rest in the street armed themselves with matchets and they started fighting.
This is what the street urchins have been causing almost every week in the streets, and the police seem to be helpless because they have not made any efforts to stop the fracas. This incessant fighting is affecting our businesses and many people are afraid of going about their respective engagements.”
Reports said the situation was brought under control after a team of anti-riot policemen, members of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, and the Navy stormed the streets and chased them all out. It was learnt that some arrests were made while the policemen are still patrolling the area
