Announce Ebola cure and go to jail, FDA warns

The very act of suggesting or announcing a potential cure for the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, has become riskier than envisaged as claimants of such unverified and “unorthodox” cures now stand the risk of going to prison if threats by the American Food and Drug Administration, FDA, are anything to go by.
vaccine-Ebola
EVD, a deadly and currently incurable disorder that has killed over 3,000 persons in West Africa since the beginning of the year, is currently in the global spotlight as local and foreign scientists and researchers as well as top pharmaceutical companies and organisations join the race to find a lasting cure to the pestilence.
vaccine-EbolaBut for the World Health Organisation, WHO, Centres for Diseases Control, CDC and other global health bodies there is currently remains no cure for EVD.
From bitter kola to salt water solution and Ewedu among others, the practice of unsupported, uncorroborated and potentially fraudulent claims of unverified and unscientific Ebola cures have made the rounds since the outbreak of the EVD in West Africa and Nigeria in particular.
Regulatory agencies had since gone tough on what is described as moves to prevent people from being led astray and causing more panic in the country.
Just last week, the American Food and Drug Administration, FDA, and the Federal Trade Commission, FTC, threatened three companies – the Natural Solutions Foundation, the Young Living Company, and doTerra Company – with criminal charges for making Ebola treatment claims while marketing their products.
In a copy of the strongly- worded warning letter written by the Agency over the purported fraudulent health claims regarding Ebola treatments, the FDA reprimanded the companies over claims that their products could treat or prevent Ebola.
The latest development is coming on the heels of the threat by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration of Nigeria, NAFDAC, to prosecute a Nigerian Professor of Ophthalmology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, for unverified cure claim of the EVD, using Ewedu, a native vegetable.
Penultimate week, Director – General of the Agency, Dr. Paul Orhii, who described the development as a national embarrassment, had vowed that the Ewedu cure claimant would face the full wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent warning to others with penchant to perpetuate such bogus claims that had tendency to mislead or create panic within the populace.
Essentially, claims of treatment or cures for diseases are not certifiable without incontrovertible evidence. But the FDA which threatened possible criminal prosecutions including jail, in the event of the failure to immediately withdraw such claims from the public domain, also came under criticism for its hard stance.
For instance, arguments that the FDA and other regulators failed to heed the WHO recommendation encouraging use of experimental and unproven pharmaceutical drugs including herbs or natural remedy continue to make the rounds.
In the wake of the EVD outbreak in Lagos last July, the Federal government set up a Treatment Research Group comprising top scientists and researchers including Prof. Maurice Iwu, whose researches on bitter kola as a potential cure for the Ebola disease have generated tremendous interest.
Prior to this, a Scientific Committee on Verification of Herbal Cure Claims set up last year by the Federal government has been looking into the potential discovery of a local herbal cure for series of ailments in the country.
No verifiable cure for the disease has ever been announced but strong argument has been put forward for herbal medicine which many say may ultimately hold the key to a universally acceptable cure. There are no documented reports of scientific tests with Ebola viruses using hers or other natural products.
The FDA had consistently urged consumers to be aware of unverified products sold particularly online claiming to prevent or treat the Ebola virus. Since the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa, numerous consumer complaints about a variety of products claiming to either prevent the Ebola virus or treat the infection have inundated the Administration.
Although there are experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments under development, these investigational products are in the early stages of product development, have not yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness. None of them are FDA approved and the supply is very limited.
There are no approved vaccines, drugs, or investigational products specifically for Ebola available for purchase on the Internet. By law, dietary supplements cannot claim to prevent or cure disease.
According to the FDA, individuals promoting unapproved and fraudulent products must take immediate action to correct or remove these claims or face potential FDA action.

Synagogue: We had approval to build 12 floors —Joshua’s aide

Barely two weeks after the collapse of the guest house at Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos, a fresh indication emerged yesterday that the church was given an approval for a 12-storey building by the Lagos State government.
 TB Joshua-Synagogue Church
 TB Joshua-Synagogue ChurchTB Joshua-Synagogue Church
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, yesterday, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, an aide to Prophet T.B Joshua, refuted reports that the building had no approval.
He said: “It is not true and I stand to be corrected. I want to also point out that whosoever said that was not saying the correct thing, because I also listened to a commissioner of Lagos State, when he came to your studio. He said that when he got there, he discovered that there was no approval for the building, meaning that he has not been there before and there was nothing of such. Yes, the church had approval.”
Asked if the church had shown the approval to the Lagos State Government authorities, he said: “Yes, ofcourse. Officials of Lagos State Government have been there severally. They have even come to look at other buildings in the church premises. So, there is no additional sturcture to the building. We are talking of a building that is on its own. We have the pictures. It’s a new structure.
“The building is still under construction, but it is not as if it is an attachment to the church auditorium. It is a building standing on its own and in a different compound. It is a guest house. It is a building that has its own design and approval. This particular structure in question, has an approval for 12-storey building and they have even come to examine the foundation and its casting after this incident. They have therefore seen that it was done with the specification of a 12-storey building.”
When contacted, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, declined comment on the matter saying, “there will be no further comment on the collapsed Synagogue building until investigations into the matter are concluded and the report made public.”
Lagos is conducting thorough investigation— Fashola
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, declared that the state government is conducting thorough investigation to unravel the facts surrounding the collapse of a six-storey building owned by the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, saying, “we are acting methodically on the issue.”
This came two weeks after the six-storey guest house owned by SCOANs killed over 100 persons and 131 others rescued.
Fashola, who stated this  during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, NITP, led by its President, Mr. Steve Onu, at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja, warned residents to refrain from making false statements on the collapsed building.
The governor, while reacting to complaints from residents, demanding immediate action said: ”People must understand that when accidents like this happen, there are many issues involved. Perhaps, we have got used to what was amounts to an inappropriate conduct on arrival at an accident scene and make pronouncements on what happened before the investigations are concluded.
“Residents must desist from this act and wait for professionals to make pronouncements. I think we should just allow that process to go on. I think the investigation will be held if we refrain from any further comment about this incident. So, some of the people we took away from the accident scenes, who are in coma and who are in shock, people count them as dead people.
“This kind of behaviour must stop. Unless there is anybody keeping dead bodies in his house and private hospital, we are the regulators and all those bodies come to our mortuaries. So, we must account for them.” he warned.

2015: Buhari, Atiku clash over procedure for presidential primaries

The All Progressives Congress, APC was at the weekend headed for a serious crisis following strong reservations among its major presidential candidates over the procedure for adopting the 2015 presidential candidate for the party.
Atiku buhri
At the end of a National Executive Committee, NEC meeting of the party last weekend, the party was unable to forge a consensus on the issue with associates of the major aspirants reportedly holding on to their positions.
Two of the major presidential aspirants, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, Journalist learnt were at the head of the major divisions over the adoption of a consensus or the conduct of primaries for the adoption of the presidential candidate. The other major aspirants, notably, Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso of Kano State and Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah are reportedly indifferent.
Atiku buhriYesterday, aides of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, who is also set to enter the fray were largely mute on the issue, as one said it was too premature to express a position given the fact the governor is yet to formally declare his intention.
Buhari wants consensus candidacy
Party sources disclosed that Buhari’s associates in the party were pushing for consensus on the fact that majority of the party positions across board were filled with consensus. On the other hand, the Buhari supporters are praying that if the consensus arrangement is jettisoned for any reason that a direct primary involving all 18 million registered members of the party be held.
Their point is being strongly opposed by Atiku’s growing supporters within the party hierarchy who say that a direct primary would be unwieldy, costly. Rather, the Atiku camp has proposed what it called a Modified Direct Primary that would involve about 20,000 delegates choosing the party candidate. That prospect is feared by the Buhari camp who claimed that it would offer opportunity to easily woo or take over delegates hitherto pledged to other aspirants.
According to the Buhari supporters, the introduction of full direct primary would limit the prospect of Atiku wooing the delegates unlike a modified primary that could see Atiku and his agents now in the field winning the number of delegates.
“Having carefully examined our great party” the APC constitution, especially Article 20 and the Electoral Act 2010, one comes to the inevitable conclusion that it is better to adopt consensus in electing our candidates for House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, Governor and presidential candidates and where it fails to adopt direct primary,” a major Buhari supporter in the NEC told selected newsmen last weekend.
“It is on record that more than 80% of the ward, local government area and state congresses which produced the current executives of our great party were conducted through consensual arrangement. And more than 95% of the current National Executive Committee were elected via consensus,” he said
“When one considers the bitterness, rancour and bad blood indirect primary will most likely generate, it becomes safer to work towards a consensual agreement. We must at all times bear in mind that we are being hunted and that those who boasted to rule Nigeria for 60 years uninterrupted, are still hell bent to scuttle the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians for genuine ideological regime change.
“We must take note that our challenger, the ruling party has just announced the nomination of the incumbent President as its candidate by consensus means and they had commenced presidential campaign with vigour and dexterity”.
Atiku at the weekend, however, pledged his determination to abide by any democratic procedure adopted by the party even as he canvassed the advantages of the Modified Direct Primaries.
In an email statement issued to correspondents on the issue by his media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, the Atiku camp said:
“Our candidate is a democrat. What he is opposed to is any undemocratic process going by the name of consensus, imposition or anointment. Back in the PDP, if you remember, he dragged the party to court and won on these issues with a resounding victory.
Atiku’s camp proposes Modified Direct Primary
“The decision of our campaign to support the Modified Direct Primary is not because of anything but for its practical applicability.
“If you say you want direct primary, how can you get all 18 million registered APC voters to take part?
“That would mean you will be setting up a vote in every polling booth, doing the same thing as INEC is doing. It will be the same thing as a general election.Where do you have the resources, the manpower, the time and the security support for this?”
“Secondly, don’t forget that the figure of the registered members is not a settled issue in many states. There are many places in which it is being disputed. Besides, it keeps changing everyday. New members are coming in and some are also leaving us. How do you deal with this?”
“Those who argue for direct primaries also need to factor in the fact that there is no way you take the process from the hands of governors if you allow it to take place in the states. Genuine fears on the part of some people is that in nearly each state, they may just end up writing the results or where this is not possible, breathe down on the necks of local officials to do as they wish.”
“The Modified Direct Primary cannot on the other hand be faulted as being undemocratic because the delegates coming forward, as proposed, are all elected officials. There is no dispute concerning their status as elected officials. For this reason alone, they are credible because they are representative of their wards. We support it because we believe it is broad enough to make for popular representation.”
“Even at this, 20,000 delegates is still a large number to bring under one roof, considering that even the PDP brings together between four to five thousands delegates only for the their presidential primaries.”

Unease as Benue sells off 30m shares in Dangonte Cement

THERE is considerable unease in Benue State over the sale of Dangote Cement shares held in trust for the indigenes by the Benue Investment and Property Company Limited.
The sell-off, which is taking place on the floor ot the Nigerian  Stock Exchange, has erased about 30 million shares, valued at over N7 billion off the original over 90 million shares, which serves as portfolio investment for the state and the parastatals.
Sources, however, said that the government plans to sell all the shares, before the elections setting a target of N20 billion from the exercise. If carried through, Benue State would have lost all the shares of its portfolio  investment in the cement manufacturing conglomerate.
Investigation revealed that many Benue indigenes are taken aback by the government’s decision which they say is to deprive the people of their priced investment in Dangote Cement.
Some top leaders of the Action for Progressive Change, APC, queried the motive behind the sale and called on the  state government to urgently clear the air over the development to avoid any untoward reaction from the people.
It was gathered that a considerable number of persons questioned the rational by the state government to deprive its people of what they termed, “this valuable investment,” at a time the company is doing well in the capital market.
They feared that if no action is taken to prevent the wholesale sale of the shares, the state would be the loser, since the proceeds so far realized have not been invested in any profitable venture, nor disclosed to the State House of Assembly for  appropriation as required by law.
They cited the case of what transpired in Delta State where its shares in Airtel were surreptitiously disposed and the proceeds invested as private equity in the defunct Oceanic Bank.
“We suspect the state government is building a war chest for the 2015 elections by the surreptitious manner the share are being sold. Otherwise, what stops it from informing the citizens of the state about it?
“Did the government obtain the consent of the State House of Assembly  before selling the shares?
Where is the money realized so far from the transaction kept?  These and other pertinent  questions will be asked by us , “an APC chieftain from the state said.

Why I want to be President in 2015, by Kwankwaso

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso says he wants to become Nigeria’s President in 2015 to enable him use his requisite experience to address the fundamental socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria.
*Kwankwaso
*KwankwasoKwankwaso, who spoke with journalists last night in Kano, pointed out that he had been studying the problems facing the country over the years and had come to the conclusion that he possesses the requisite experience and expertise to tackle the issues and give Nigerians and Nigeria a new lease of life.
He explained that given his rich background as a long-standing public servant, an engineer and a one-time Defence Minister, he truly understands what the country needs in order to become great among the comity of nations.
The governor said the country needed someone like him, who had seen the nation from various angles to be able to solve its problems and advance the interest of Nigerians at all levels.
The governor said that although he was still consulting with other stakeholders across the length and breadth of Nigeria on his next political move, he would make a formal declaration for the presidential contest at the appropriate time.
Kwankwaso said that more than anything else, the worsening security threat to Nigeria and the seeming inability of the administration to address it were unacceptable as it had driven away over four million Nigerians into Chad, Niger Republic and Cameroun as refugees.
“The situation is so bad that apart from those displaced by the insurgents, many other Nigerians have been hospitalised while others have gone into hiding just to save their lives, while the system continues to give assurance of victory,” the governor lamented.
“So many Nigerians have also been displaced in Chibok, Gwoza and Bama as well as other places in the country. This is not a good thing for Nigeria and we need to rise up and find a lasting solution to the problem, which is not beyond us.
“A situation whereby Nigeria’s leadership is encouraging division is not good for the unity of Nigeria. We should stop abusing the very people we are supposed to protect and give them a sense of hope and dignity,” Kwankwaso noted.
The governor said that in a bid to give his state a new lease of life, his administration had undertaken major infrastructural projects including three major flyover bridges, major roads and water projects across the state in addition to establishing 23 big dams for water and energy supply.
He pointed out that in a bid to rid Kano of malevolent elements and reduce criminality, his administration, working in league with security agents had constantly been raiding black spots in the metropolis, including the Sabongari Market, which he described as the biggest drug market in Kano.
According to Kwankwaso, illicit drugs worth N4 billion had been seized from the market and destroyed by security agents in the last three years in a bid to flush out the couriers from the state.
The governor said that the All Progressives Congress, where he crossed over to last December from the ruling PDP, was working hard to ensure that it wins the next election convincingly and use the opportunity to move the country forward.

Family petitions Jonathan over alleged extra-judicial killing of 31-yr-old graduate

Federal Government’s plan to pay off the over N200 billion gas supply debt owed by defunct PHCN will avert the impending systemic non-performing loans in Nigeria banks.
economyThe payment of the debt overhang by the Federal Government will help power generating companies (GENCOs) meet their debt-service obligations to banks on loans of almost N500 billion, on which some have been falling behind. It has also headed off a threat to the banking industry by assisting the struggling GENCOs with an intervention fund.
The N213 billion ($1.3 billion) fund announced by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration on Sept. 19 will be used to pay off gas-supply debts owed by power companies and to cover revenue shortfalls.
The exposure of banks to the power sector indicate that UBA Plc , Nigeria’s fourth-biggest bank by market value, granted $700 million in loans to several investors, including Transnational Corporation of Nigeria, which got $215 million to buy Ughelli Power, the country’s second-biggest gas-fueled plant with capacity for 900 megawatts.
Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, the largest lender by market value on its part advanced $170 million to Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd for the concession of Jebba and Kainji hydropower plants.
Zenith Bank Plc, the second-biggest lender, provided N40 billion for the acquisition of two electricity distribution companies in Lagos. Others such as Ecobank Transnational Inc., Diamond Bank Plc and Skye Bank also provided loans to power investors.
economy
“The government is reacting to the risk affecting the power industry as a whole and the sustainability of the reform, which dovetails to the banks,” Pabina Yinkere of Vetiva Capital Management Ltd. told Reuters. “This intervention fund will ease the stress in the industry and in effect reduce the probability of loans going bad.”
Nigeria dismantled its power monopoly and sold the hydro-and gas-powered plants it ran last year to try to bring in investment needed to expand electricity supply, with demand more than three times the current output of about 3,800 megawatts.
Companies including Transnational Corp. of Nigeria Plc, Korea Electric Power Corp. and Forte Oil Plc (FO) paid more than $3 billion for controlling interests in 15 power generators and distributors.
Authorities in Africa’s largest economy are putting together new regulations to protect lenders, electricity consumers and other utilities in the event that the power companies fail, according to central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele and Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.
While the ratio of non-performing loans in Nigerian banks remains low at 4 percent of all borrowings, compared with a high of 35 percent in November 2010, it is expected to increase for electricity companies “as the new distribution and generation businesses pile up debts and struggle under the early phases of liberalization,” Philippe de Pontet, Africa director at New York-based Eurasia Group, said in a Sept. 24 e-mailed note to clients.
The prominent role the central bank is assuming in managing the bailout indicates that Emefiele, like his predecessor Lamido Sanusi, is keen to give the bank “an active role in the economy” through areas including power, agriculture and manufacturing, according to de Pontet.
Under Sanusi, the central bank fired the chief executive officers of eight lenders in 2010 for mismanagement as Nigeria reeled from the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis.
The banks were bailed out with 600 billion naira while the government set up the Asset Management Corp. of Nigeria, or Amcon, to buy bad debts from lenders and save the financial system from collapse. Amcon said last month it won’t buy any more bad debts from lenders.
“The government is sending out strong signals about its intention to make the power sector work,” Dolapo Oni, Lagos-based head of energy research at Ecobank Research, said in an e-mailed response to questions.
“If these interventions allow the declaration of the Transitional Electricity Market, then they may have averted a crisis.”
The bailout will enable an October start to the electricity market, where generators and distributors can buy and sell energy in a process mediated by the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trader, according to a timetable set by regulators.
The bulk trader has almost $1 billion in risk guarantees provided by the World Bank and Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Investment Authority, with an additional $750 million to back trading by generators and distributors. While the bailout doesn’t address all the challenges, it is a step in the right direction, Bismarck Rewane, CEO of Lagos-based Financial Derivatives Co., a risk advisory firm, said.
“The signal is that the power investors will be supported,” he said. “Power is too important that the government cannot let it fail.”

World Bank provides $400m to tackle Ebola

Following alarming evidence of the spread of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the World Bank Group has announced that it will nearly double its financing to $400 million to help the worst-affected countries address the emergency and build stronger health systems for the years ahead.
HEALTH PERSONNEL IN PROTECTIVE  KITS AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL IN ABUJA ON TUESDAY (12/8/14).This represents $170 million in new funding. With this announcement, the bank will put $230 million toward the emergency response and $170 million for medium- and long-term projects.
The new resources – which the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors will consider in the coming weeks – will be targeted at rapidly increasing the health care workforce and purchasing needed supplies in order to bring care and treatment to all parts of the affected countries.
HEALTH PERSONNEL IN PROTECTIVE KITS AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL IN ABUJA ON TUESDAY (12/8/14).The funding also is aimed at building a stronger health care system because it will aim to train cadres of health workers to bolster care at a community level throughout the affected region.
“The global community is now responding with the urgency and the scale needed to begin to turn back this unprecedented Ebola crisis,” said World Bank Group President, Jim Yong Kim, who was speaking at a special session on the Ebola crisis at the UN.
“The real challenge now is to bring care and treatment to the most remote areas as well as the cities and then to build a stronger health care system. This funding will help the countries start a massive scale up of training of community health workers and bring needed supplies and equipment.
The World Bank Group previously announced that it was mobilizing $230 million for the three countries hardest hit by the crisis—Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone—including a $117 million emergency response.
This support – coordinated closely with the World Health Organisation, the UN, US and other international and country partners – has assisted countries in treating the sick, cope with the economic impact and improve their public health systems.
The additional planned support will make $113 million that had been earmarked in the earlier package for longer-term help immediately available for the emergency response. The new package will have $170 million set aside in medium- to longer-term assistance for the countries’ health systems.
More people have died in the 2014 Ebola epidemic in West Africa than in all previous Ebola outbreaks combined since the virus was first discovered in 1976.
A World Bank analysis, released last week, found that if the virus continues to surge in the three worst-affected countries, its economic impact could deal a potentially catastrophic blow to these already fragile states.
However, the analysis also found that economic costs can be limited if swift national and international responses succeed in containing the epidemic and mitigating fear resulting from people’s concerns about contagion, which is fueling the economic impact.

Labour Party crisis: NLC disowns Daniel’s faction

The controversy over the authentic executive of the Labour Party in Ogun may have been finally laid to rest as the Nigeria Labour Congress endorsed the Sunday Oginni’s faction.
The NLC which is the original owner of the Labour Party has waded into the controversy between former governor Gbenga Daniel and Sunday Oginni’s factions over the authentic executive of the party in the state.
The NLC in a letter titled letter of introduction of Labour Party officials in Ogun State signed by national president Waheed Omar and addressed to the state Chairman of the NLC Akeem Ambali said it has chosen Sunday Oginni and Abayomi Arabanbi as the officials of the party.
The letter read in part “this is to introduce to you the gentlemen, comrade Oginni Olaposi and comrade Abayomi Arabambi , both of whom are Ogun State Labour authentic officials.
“We had very useful discussion on how to move the party forward. Sequel to the discussion of congress NEC in Enugu on repositioning the labour party.
“I hereby urge you to please discuss and work with them towards realising the NEC’s resolve”, Omar said.
Journalist however, gathered that, the duo of Oginni and Arabambi had held a meeting with the state Chairman of the NLC, Ambali where they reportedly perfected to reposition the party.

Pope Francis denounces neglect, abandonment of the old people

Pope Francis has denounced the neglect and abandonment of the old as “hidden euthanasia”.
He said this on Sunday at the Vatican City, while addressing over 40,000 elderly people, which includes grandfathers, grandmothers, widows and widowers, during the festive event in St. Peter’s Square.
Francis called for more respect for the vital role of old people, particularly in rich countries, as vital transmitters of experience and knowledge.
He said homes for elderly people should really be homes, and not be seeing as prisons where people live “forgotten, hidden and neglected.
Frances stressed the importance of the old in society and he said homes for the elderly could not be allowed to become “prisons” where care took a back seat to business interests by those who run them.
He said a data by World Health Organisation, indicated that there are more than 600 million people in the world today.
Francis said the data indicated that the figure was expected to double over the next 11 years and reach two billion by 2050, most in the developing world.
“Old people are just discarded, as victims of abandonment that is tantamount to hidden euthanasia,’’ he said.
“This is the result of a throw-away culture that is hurting our world so much,” he added.
Elderly people, including former Pope Benedict, attended the gathering tagged “A gathering of the wise and wrinkled.
Francis, 77, warmly embraced his older predecessor twice during the service and told the crowd that having Benedict, who now has the title, Emeritus Pope, living in the Vatican was “like having a wise grandfather at home”.
This was the third time since his resignation in February, 2013 that Benedict, 87, attended a public event.
He looked relatively healthy as he walked into the square using a cane and took a special seat in the front.
Benedict, wearing a white overcoat, stayed for about an hour to hear old people speak about their lives and listen to a speech by his successor.
The crowd was entertained by singers including world renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli.
One of the elderly couples who addressed the gathering, Mubarak and Aneesa Hano, are Christian refugees from northern Iraq who had to flee their home because the area had been taken over by Islamic State militants.

NFA election: Police promise adequate security amidst high expectation in Warri

Ahead of the 2014 Election Congress of the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) in Warri, the Delta Police Command has assured of adequate security.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu, disclosed this on Sunday in a telephone interview.
“Though the NFA has not written officially to the police but we will give them the adequate security needed to ensure a hitch-free election,’’ she said.
The Chairman, Delta Sports Commission, Amaju Pinnick, who is also one of the contestants in the election, said that Delta was fully prepared to host the election.
Similarly, Mike Ikeogwu, Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Delta chapter, promised to provide adequate media coverage of the election.
“Expectations are high and I am particularly happy about the NFA election coming up in Warri; I assure you, we are going to give it the best of coverage,’’ he said.
A grassroots football administrator, Anthony Uvwie, in his remarks, said that the election would put to rest the crisis that had rocked the NFA in the last four months.
He noted that Nigeria football had undergone some turbulence resulting in poor performance of the players in the last two qualifying matches against Congo and South Africa
“The two qualifying matches against Congo and South Africa in the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) was very poor because we failed to put our football house in order,’’ he said.
Also, a sport analyst in Warri, Timothy Mba urged the warring factions to sheath their swords and work together for the common interest of the nation’s football.
“What should be paramount to the NFA is how to qualify for the 2015 AFCON to be hosted by Morocco,’’ he said.
He said that the issue of who would take over the mantle of leadership from the incumbent Aminu Maigari as the federation’s president should been secondary.
“Crisis cannot take our football to the enviable height we desire.
“In fact, I am afraid that if the situation persists, the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) may have no other option than to sanction Nigeria,’’ Mba said.
Another soccer enthusiast, Sunny Akpokona, said that he was optimistic that the election would be successful adding that any of the contestants that emerges winner would definitely improve the sport.
“We in Warri are very much ready to host the NFA come Sept. 30 and I am sure that all the contestants have what it takes to carry the nation’s football to the next level,’’ he said.
It would be recalled that the NFA converged on the ancient city of Warri on Sept. 20 to draw a roadmap to successfully host the election into the federation’s executive positions.
Prior to the Extra-ordinary general assembly of the federation, a Federal High Court in Jos issued an injunction restraining the NFA from holding the congress.
The NFA, however, denied receipt of any court order, claiming that they were not served.
A Warri-based lawyer and human rights activist, Oghenejabor Ikimi, said that legally, the NFA could go ahead with the election since they were not served with the court order.
“Everything in Nigeria is about desperation; they should stop the desperation, personal interest and greedy motives before FIFA raises its hammer on them.
“As far as I am concern, it is still a rumour since they were not served with the court injunction; so they can go ahead with the election,’’ he said. (NAN)

Gunmen invade Enugu varsity, shoot 3 students

Gunmen invade Enugu varsity, shoot 3 studentsTHREE students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Agbani were, Friday night, shot and wounded by suspected armed bandits who invaded their hostel.
The students were undergoing treatment at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, where they were rushed to in the early hours of yesterday.
The father of one of the students said  his son was undergoing surgery at the hospital.
He said  the student was shot in the stomach and it was suspected that some bullets were lodged in his abdomen which doctors were battling to remove.
The two other victims were also undergoing surgery at the hospital while efforts were being made to contact their parents.
The Unique Hostel, where the incident occurred and other hostels within the Agbani permanent site of the university, according to a  source, have been placed under security watch as it was suspected that the gunmen could be members of a secret cult.
To forestall a reprisal attack, the source said, the management had taken measures to beef up security at the hostels with plain-clothes policemen deployed to strategic locations.
Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the attack, said  preliminary investigations revealed that the gunmen could be “student-robbers”, assuring that the police would do everything to get to the root of the matter

Untold Story Of The Decaying 500-year-old Kano Dye Pits

It’s a business that the people of Kano have been practising for over five centuries, and is still seen aslucrative in the face of modern-day developmentprocesses; the dye business. But due to neglect,
the dye pits in Kofar Mata can no longer satisfy theneeds of the dye industry, while the site has become
a tourism site. Abubakar Salihi, Kano writes The Kofar Mata dye pits have been in existence in the heart of the ancient city of Kano for the past 500
years; that is to say, it was established in 1498. It has remained a
tourists’ attraction site for students and researchers from across the world. Kofar Mata dye pits also played a significant role in the collective
economy of the then everbusiness community of Kano. History also has it that the originators of Kofar Mata dye pits were the
earliest wise business people who had cleverly set up the industry in a time when even the western world was yet to be industrialised.
Kofar Mata dye pits are located very close to the old Kofar Mata historical
gate and walls, also known as Ganuwa. According to a school of thought, the dye pits existedlong before the building of the Kofar Mata gate and walls. The Kofar Mata dye pits are also located east
of the Kano City central mosque. The famous Kofar Mata dye pits have surpassed history as even the greatest of world leaders have confirmed knowledge of it in books of
history and great museums across the globe. However, it is now faced with time changing events and leadership. It was originally an open place with no fence or beautification, and
nothing was being done to modernise it.JOURNALIST checks have revealed that the less-thantwo square kilometres field was well fenced, painted and all the dye pits were either rebuilt or reconstructed
to meet modern demands. At Kofar Mata dye pits, there areno fewer than a hundred dye pits grounds of about 12 pits below the ground with the distance of one o two metres from each dye pit.
Malam Mamudu Abubakar is among the great grandchildren of the inventors of Kofar Mata dye pits, and he is 60-year-old, and has spent over 50 years in the business of dying. Abubakar was born in Kofar
Mata quarters, so also his father and grandfather. He described the business of dying as quite lucrative in the heydays unlike now when modernisation has taken over almost
everything, including the dying business. He confirmed to Journalists that Kofar Mata dye pits remains a tourists attraction
site and that students, researchers, tourists and journalists from across the world have been visiting the site throughout the year. Foreign tourists come to buy their materials there and learn how the dying
is conducted in the old ways.According to him, many of the visitors took a lot of pictures and movie shots of them and jot down some of their words.Others who visit the dye pits are businessmen and women from
Mali, Niger and Maiduguri in Nigeria, who brought their fabrics, such as Babbar Riga, Rawani for dying.Abubakar explained that they don’t just dye fabrics and keep them, but rather they make it for those in the
business of selling traditional attires.Malam Abubakar explained how they put in the efforts and materials into the dye pit and all other needed items for them to do the dying job.He said they make sure that each pit
contained between 2,000 to 2,500litres of water and mixed with ashes made from firewood of about 50 kilogramme, followed by what they termed Baba (pieces of wood) which they normal sourced from villages,to produce the required deep blue
colour.
Having this mixture for seven days, the next thing is to go back to what they termed as Katsi; that’s the excess of the previous mixture that was removed out of the particular dye pit and kept to dry. This excess Katsi will be made in blocks
and put on fire made of huge pieces of firewood for about seven days before it burnt to ashes. This residue Katsi will then be mixed with the 2,000 litres of water, 50 kilogramme of firewood ashes and would continue to be diluted on
daily basis for another two weeks.According to him, each of the mixture has a specific function to  give required colour or colour quality, and also, a well mixed dye pit can have a lifespan of a year before it lost its value.
It takes Malam Abubakar and his colleagues in the dying business three days of soaking fabrics in and out of the pits for three days before it finalised. He also explained the health benefit of the concoction, saying a pregnant women can
drink it for the cure of pile, among other ailments, while making the allegation that medical doctors have recommended the concoction for their pregnant patients. It also cures rashes, diarrhea, and starvation in children, he further claimed.
He gave an incident that happened about 30 years ago, when the Yoruba people came to him for Katsi and they told him that it was used for curing other diseases, which he didn’t know much about.
However, at the other end of the dye pits site, there were a number of people practicing what they called Bugu; that is hammering the dyed and dried fabrics with wood. According to a young Baballe, the practice of Bugu is as old as dying itself and
always came second to dying. In fact, it was an old way of pressing clothes into shape, he added, while describing the business as lucrative, considering that it goes with modern time where people brought their clothes for bugu in the case of
power outage.
It was observed with utmost dismay how the long-age dying industry became a shadow of itself, where out of the almost 100 dye pits only one has been functioning.
Enquiries at the Kano State Tourism Board to ascertain the mystery surrounding the total collapsed of the trade of traditional dying revealed that insurgency, modern dying and negligence on the part of government were the causes of the
death of the trade. In our encounter with one of the tourism board staff, he expressed concern that the board had not been doing enough to assist the business than doing all what it could to keep the  place as the only tourists attraction site.
He also emphasised the significance of modern dying as all-encompassing and can dye various colours than traditional dying that produced only lagoon blue colour.
Kofar Mata dye pits site is now under the control and administration of the Kano State Tourism Board, and still exists and continues to receive tourists
and business patrons, only marred by the insurgency in the country today.

Dirty tricks petrol stations, attendants use to cheat customers

Mrs. Bisola Ayeni, a businesswoman in her early 40s confidently left her house at Egbeda (Lagos) with an almost empty tank heading for Ikeja. The red light of the fuel indicator was blinking nonstop but Ayeni knew the quantity of fuel in her tank would take her to the next available filling station where she had hoped to fill up her tank.

Indeed, as she got to the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ayeni drove into the filling station and told the attendant to fill her car with N5,000 worth of fuel while she rummaged her handbag to bring out the money as well as pick a call. That was her undoing.

Petrol stationsAyeni would tell our correspondent that she didn’t bother to look at the pump while the sale was on because she didn’t envisage any foul act, besides she knew the level a N5,000 worth of fuel would rise to on her fuel gauge. Ayeni only managed a quick glance at the meter and when she saw that it was reading, she relaxed and enjoyed her discussion on the phone.

She said, “When I finished, I looked at the pump and I saw N5,000 on the price column, I paid him and drove away. I expected the light indicating low fuel to go off and the indicator to rise, but it didn’t happen.

“Even if the rise in the fuel indicator would be gradual, I expected a major shift. Lo and behold, the light never went off and the indicator never rose.

“Oh my God, I was confused and very angry, so I turned back, while praying that the car wouldn’t run out of fuel. By the time I got to the petrol station, I was fuming.”

Ayeni said she had almost slapped the attendant who attended to her having shouted on him when the station manager came out.

“On hearing what happened, the manager gave the sales boy a resounding slap, apologised to me and ordered him to sell the fuel again, and I heard him saying the N5,000 would be deducted from his salary. We both stood by him while he sold the fuel, the gauge rose even before I left the station, which means he cheated me earlier. I still wouldn’t know how he did it,” she said.

Ayeni’s experience is common among vehicle owners, who had at one time or the other thought they had bought fuel but later found out they either bought nothing or were short-changed in terms of the quantity. A cross section of vehicle owners who spoke to our correspondent alleged that they had noticed same at one time or the other but said that there was nothing they could do since they really could not establish any foul play.

In case you once bought fuel from a filling station and it seemed like nothing was added to your fuel tank after you have left, or you felt what was sold to you wasn’t commensurate with what you paid for or expected, you may have been cheated under your close watch even with your eyes wide open.

press and journalist  had a revealing chat with fuel attendants of some popular filling stations in Lagos and they explained how they make quick but huge cash from unsuspecting customers.

One of them who identified himself simply as Owolabi John, said there are many ways fuel attendants cheat customers who have come to buy fuel, which many people are not aware of.

Devouring a massive plate of hot and spicy pepper soup and a bottle of chilled beer our correspondent bought for him, John readily exposed all the tricks on how they make money.

By the way, John earns N10,000 as a fuel attendant. He wants to pursue a university education. There is no other help from anywhere else, as such John admitted leaving no stone unturned to take advantage of gullible customers to make some money from what he described as “the customers’ carelessness.”

“Ideally, when we resume, we take the reading on the meter on the fuel dispenser, which we call the opening meter, and when we close, we take the reading, which we also call the closing meter. Then, we multiply the difference in the readings by the cost per litre, which is the amount we deliver to the manager. If there is any surplus, it belongs to the attendant, and if there is loss, the attendant will look for money to make it up. If the shortage is a lot of money, the manager may allow that the money be deducted from the person’s salary if the person is not sacked,” he explained.

However, that surplus money may not have been a miracle or manna from heaven; it could simply be a product of manipulation by the attendants.

According to John, there are different types of fuel dispensers, such as Marathon, Sanki, Eagle Star, etc, and each machine has its peculiar way of being adjusted. “On the keyboard of some of them, where we enter the number of litres or amount, which is either in front or on the side, there is usually a button labelled ‘Recall, TIM/CAL’ or any other label, depending on the machine. The essence of the button is to enable the attendant to see the past sales. If you want to see your last ten sales, you just press Recall, then the number you want to see etc, depending on the number you want, and it shows you the amount. Beyond seeing our past sales, we use it to make money.

“If I sell N2,000 worth of fuel to a customer, and the next customer also wants to buy N2,000. If I observe that the second customer Isn’t paying attention, I will sell some quantity, maybe N1,500 and press Stop or Cancel, depending on the machine press Recall, 1, then press Ok. With that, N2,000 will appear on the screen and that is what the customer will see on the meter, believing the sale is complete. This can be done in less than one second. That is one of the ways, and at the close of business I remove mine which is the excess of the actual litre sales.

“Imagine if I do that for about ten customers in a day, with varying gain from each case, which depends largely on the amount of fuel the customer is buying and how sensitive the person is. I could make up to N10, 000 in one day,” he explained.

According to him, attendants could go to the extent of writing out some past sales on a paper where they can easily have a glance to know which number to recall when a customer is distracted or looks away, since many people prefer to buy based on price and not litre.

“When customers come, we observe them and see if they are tired or we try to distract them, sometimes with the help of our colleagues by engaging them in a chat or doing things that could easily distract them. As soon as they look away, if the seller has made an appreciable sale, he/she would have mastered or checked his paper to see the last time he sold that particular amount, as soon as it is possible, he will press it, and press OK. Before the customer looks back, the sale will appear complete,” John explained.

John’s revelation explained one of the ways Ayeni might have been cheated. Another fuel attendant, who simply identified himself as Owode Kabir, told our correspondent that the use of Recall or TIM button is the easiest way to make quick money because the customers would think the machine was fast, so they wouldn’t always suspect anything, even though some come back to complain.

However, Kabir stressed that not all attendants are involved in the act, but that many of them do it as long as there is opportunity and that in some cases, they settle the station manager at the close of work if they are able to make some money, which they do everyday anyway.

But ‘Recall or TIM/CAL’ button is not the only way to make money from customers, Kabir would tell our correspondent. There is yet another way!

Even though many people know that when the nozzle is hanged on the pump, the readings revert to zero, he said they (fuel attendants) have also found a way to manoeuvre it to make some money.

“What we do is to gently place the nozzle, such that it won’t click to rub off the old sales and revert to zero, so, we fake it, which means the dispenser is still running, so if anyone comes, we simply continue from where we stop and that is why sometimes it seems like we are rushing the customers. It is easier when the last sale is a small quantity.

“Even though the use of the Recall or TIM/CAL’ button on some of these machines is the easiest method, faking the nozzle is another viable way to make money.

“If the previous sale is about N200 maybe by a Keke NAPEP and Okada rider, or even commercial buses (danfo) drivers, because they are the ones who buy fuel in bits, we will gently place the nozzle, and naturally, when you see that we remove the nozzle from the hanger, that is, from the engine, you believe that it started from zero. However, it is not always the case,” he said.

Kabir was quick to add that some station managers or managements know about their tricks but that once they are caught or reported by a customer, such person could be sacked. He added that attendants usually sell in all cases but such sales might not start from zero or could be recalled to a previous sale that had the same amount, which would be an incomplete sale for the customer.

“Sometimes we could gain up to N1,000 from one sale, it depends on the quantity that the consumer wants, and those that are caught are usually the greedy ones,” he noted.

He added that in filling stations where their dispensers do not have Recall or TIM/CAL only the last sale could be recalled, hence, once the last sale is not the same with the current sale, faking the hanging of the nozzle might be the only way to make money through such pump.

Station owners and managers also dupe customers

A female attendant with a major oil marketer company in Lagos Island, Seun Jegede, told our correspondent how station managers and filling station owners also cheat their customers.

She alleged that most filling stations alter their meters to under-dispense fuel at the detriment of customers, which is a known phenomenon among consumers. Even though this could be a product of greed and inadequate regulation, she said they also do that to make up for some loss they might have incurred during sales.

“Based on experience, I can tell you that almost all filling stations, including the ones being run by government, adjust their meters and what they do is to settle the officials from the Department of Petroleum Resources if or when they come for inspection.

“No attendant can alter the meter on his own, except the manager sanctions it because it involves the engineer changing the panel and doing some mechanical readjustment. That is why many filling stations that alter their meters have to bribe their way through because the engineers are not always there, except the manager recommends a trusted attendant to be trained so as to put the pumps back to normal if DPR comes.

“The adjustment is easier with the marathon machine because it has a key in front of the meter. This allows for quick readjustment of the meter so as to scale through the due diligence check by the DPR, which could be once in six months,” Jegede explained.

She added that the decision to alter the meter could either come from the owner of the station or the station manager in connivance with the engineer, adding that whoever orders the adjustment takes the money made from the unsold quantity.

Station attendants also cheat their employers

According to John, not only customers are open to this fraud, even the management that the attendants work for are not immune to their fraudulent acts, through what he called ‘no reading’. In this case only the price meter reads while the litre reading does not move. He said this could be a product of frequent repairs of the pump or any other mechanical fault, which could make it malfunction.

“When there is ‘no reading’ on the litre menu, and the management is not aware, there is no way the management will know the actual number of litres that have been sold.

“What we do in such cases is to sell on the basis of amount only and we sometimes negotiate with the customer for settlement because we can sell more to make money. I can even call someone from home to come and buy and keep for me, before the management finds out that the litre is not reading.

“Even though the ‘no reading’ issue rarely happens, it becomes a free for all if it happens to the diesel or kerosene pump that usually has no attendant attached to it. With that, tracing who sells what quantity may be difficult, even though an attendant must be smart to avoid being penalised.

“Another form of ‘no reading’ is when some attendants, especially those attached to diesel or kerosene that have lesser patronage compared to petrol, gently press the nozzle (just like a one-touch press) that may not read on the meter whereas some fuel will still come out. It can also happen when they finish selling and instead of hanging the nozzle, they place it inside the keg for the little quantity to drip into their kegs. It may appear little, but over a long time, the gentle one-touch press and the leftovers become a large quantity. That is why you see some attendants having kegs beside them,” John explained.

The attendants further explained that they make more money when there is epileptic power supply which force people to buy fuel in kegs. “When there is no power supply and people struggle or force your nozzle in their kegs, many of them don’t care about starting from zero, which is a plus for us,” he said.

They however said station attendants find it difficult to cheat if the customer comes out of the vehicle to stay with them, adding that those who sit in their vehicles can easily be distracted or shortchanged.

A Director in DPR, Mr. George Osahon, had strongly advised in a television programme recently that it was better for vehicle owners to buy specific amount of fuel rather than using number of litres as a yardstick.

“When you go to a modern filling station and you ask for N5,000 worth of fuel, they simply punch a pad and when it’s complete it stops by itself, and it is better to stand by the seller or keep a close watch from your car if you choose to sit in the car.

“The reason the same worth of fuel would vary in quantity at different filling stations is because some under-dispense. Nobody will ever over-dispense, people will either dispense normally or under-dispense, so if you see such differential, it is very necessary for you to call the attention of the DPR to it,” he had said.

Osahon had also said people should stop using statements like ‘fill-up the tank’ not minding how much fuel was inside their tank or the quantity coming into it, saying there is a lot of wastage in that, which is not necessary.

However, while some filling station attendants who spoke to our correspondent denied the fraud allegations, a few others admitted that some attendants do it and that it depends on the circumstance and the type of pump, as pointed out by John.

A cross section of station managers who spoke to our correspondent also dissociated their filling stations from those who cheat their customers, adding that none of their staff would survive such an attempt.

Mr. Adebola Durojaiye, who is a manager of a filling station in Ikeja, said, “People say all filling stations under-dispense but that is not true. One good way to identify those who do it is that they don’t have good patronage because whether we like it or not, customers know the good and bad stations, so, the generalisation is wrong.”

The Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Ejigbo Satellite, Mr. Ajayi Adebayo, said recently that any member of the association found indulging in sharp practices would have his/her office sealed off alongside other sanctions, while urging members to be transparent and objective in their business transactions.

In a telephone conversation with our correspondent, the Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Obafemi Olawore, said no member of the association could be involved in under-dispensing or fiddling with the pump, adding that anyone with proof of such malpractice against any MOMAN member should feel free to contact the association to complain.

“I am not aware that any MOMAN member engages in under-dispensing. However, I cannot swear an oath or beat my chest and say there is no such thing by those that we contracted to run the stations, that is, the dealers. I am not saying they do it, but anyone with proof that it happens should contact us and we will take immediate action,” Olawore added.

DPR Spokesperson, Ms. Dorothy Bassey, said the agency was doing its best to check the fraudulent practices by some filling stations through its random inspection, while describing the bribe allegations against DPR officials as untrue.

“I am confirming to you that it is not true that officials of DPR collect bribe, what kind of money are they going to pay DPR staff? That is why we shut down stations once we have any indication that they carry out any malpractice.

“It happens but not as rampant as people make it look because nobody is a fool or wants to be cheated. That is why we do a lot of public engagement for people to watch out.

“We may not be 100 per cent, but certainly, we are working to ensure that everybody is happy. We have operation offices nationwide where people can go to complain,” Bassey said.

Meanwhile, a report culled from dailyfinance.com says filling up the tank may be another way to lose money and fuel, because when the pump clicks off automatically, no additional fuel enters the tank. “Instead, fuel is likely being diverted through the pump’s vapour recovery system and back into the station’s tank, which means you are paying for gas that you are not getting.

“More importantly, the car needs space in its tank for fuel vapours to expand. Overfilling can force gas into the car’s carbon filter, leading to poor performance, reduced mileage or costly repairs. So, the next time you want to buy fuel, don’t top off your tank, it’s good for your car and even better for your wallet,” the report said.

Catholic denies condemning Oritsejafor over $9.3m arms deal

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria on Friday denied that its President, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, had accused the President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, of denting the image of Christianity in Nigeria over the controversial $9.3m allegedly found in the aircraft owned by the CAN President.

In a statement made available to  press men by its Director, (Social Communications), Rev. Fr. Chris Anyanwu, the CBCN said, “There is a poison of deliberate misinformation in the air, more deadly than the Ebola Virus Disease.

“This may be a symptom of how forthcoming political events may be handled in the media. Some persons want to, at all cost, see the North and the South, Christians and Muslims fight. In God’s name it shall not come to be.”

The organisation described such reports by some newspapers as “not only false and malicious, but a calculated attempt to further sow the seed of disharmony between Catholics and the leadership of CAN.”

The statement also said in part, “While we disassociate ourselves from the newspaper reports, it is important to put the records in the right perspective. Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama granted an interview with the Hausa BBC Service in Kaduna in which he condemned money laundering.

“All that Archbishop Kaigama said about the $9.3m saga was that the matter should be investigated in-depth to avoid insinuations, psychological projections and unhealthy rumours and gossips. A transcription of his interview will reveal that the words attributed to him were a figment of somebody’s imagination.

“He said nothing about Pastor Ayo hobnobbing with Mr. President or dragging CAN to the mud; neither did he mention the pastor’s name or Mr. President’s.

“He (Kaigama) said that the relevant authorities in Nigeria ought to investigate the issue of the $9.3m arms deals saga dispassionately and ensure that those found guilty of money laundering be punished according to the provision of the existing law of our land against money laundering.”

nnekaWhile it was in vogue,‘Nneka the Pretty Serpent’served as a career Launchpad for the likes of Ndidi Obi, Eucharia Anunobi, Ngozi Ezeonu and Rita Nzelu, Sam Loco and Kanayo O.KanayIt was directed by veteran director, Zeb Ejiro and featured cameo appearances by actors late James Iroha, Claude Eke and singer Nelly Uchendu. ‘Nneka the Pretty Serpent’ tells the story of a mermaid disguised as human
Accoding to Gabsoky, “Reproducing these films is in line with the ideals of my organisation-G-Media. We will be marketing contemporary Nigerian movies as well as classics; those movies that heralded Nollywood which included; “Battle of Musanga’, Nneka, the Pretty Serpent, Fatal Desire, Living in Bondage, Evil Passion and Circle of Doom. Some of these films, I still have them in my shelve. I will be meeting with the producers with the aim of reproducing them.
That’s why I started by reproducing my own works; Battle of Musanga, Nneka, The Pretty Serpent, Beyond the Vows. I will not limit myself to Gabosky’s Productions. I will go beyond that to create the difference in the industry. I want to tell the story that movies are supposed to sell for eternity, and not for a while”.
Gabosky said, he preserved the films, adding that the films went through audio-visual corrector in order to make them meet the standard of today. ‘It’s same production but they films are clearer now than before. British minister resigns over explicit photos report

A British minister announced his unexpected resignation on Saturday as a newspaper reported he sent an explicit photo of himself online, in the latest setback to David Cameron’s Conservative-led government.
“I have decided to resign as Minister for Civil Society having been notified of a story to be published in a Sunday newspaper,” said Brooks Newmark, a Conservative member of parliament since 2005.
“I would like to appeal for the privacy of my family to be respected at this time. I remain a loyal supporter of this government as its long-term economic plan continues to deliver for the British people,” Newmark said.
The Sunday Mirror reported that Newmark exchanged a series of sexually explicit photos online with a freelance reporter who was posing as a young female activist.
In a private message conversation on a social networking site, Newmark “sent a graphic picture exposing himself while wearing a pair of paisley pyjamas” the tabloid newspaper reported.
The then-minister also invited the reporter to meet with him during the Conservative party conference that begins on Sunday, when the party will set out its case for re-election in the May 2015 election.
It was the second blow to the prime minister on the eve of the conference, following the defection of a Conservative lawmaker to eurosceptic party UKIP earlier on Saturday.
“The prime minister has accepted Brooks Newmark’s resignation from his role as Minister for Civil Society. His replacement will be announced shortly,” Cameron’s office said in a statement.

Oxlade-Chamberlain earns Arsenal derby draw

A late equaliser from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earned Arsenal a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the first north London derby of the Premier League season on Saturday.

Having gone ahead through Nacer Chadli in the 56th minute, Tottenham were disappointed not to have recorded only their third Premier League victory at the home of their neighbours.

But though Arsenal were relieved to have avoided that fate, the point came at a cost.

Injuries to Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey, both of whom were replaced in the first half, means manager Arsene Wenger may have to rethink his tactics for the visit of Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Wenger raised a few eyebrows before the game by leaving Alexis Sanchez, the big-money close-season signing from Barcelona, on the bench, with Danny Welbeck starting up front.

Tottenham had been keen on signing England striker Welbeck from Manchester United on transfer deadline day, but he became an Arsenal player instead in a £16 million ($26.6 million, 20.2 million euros) deal.

The one surprise in the Tottenham starting line-up was the inclusion of Ryan Mason in midfield.

The 23-year-old was a scoring substitute in Wednesday night’s 3-1 League Cup victory over Nottingham Forest, but this was his first taste of Premier League action.

The first 45 minutes were goalless, but not short of incident, as referee Michael Oliver booked Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere as well as Tottenham’s Erik Lamela in the opening half hour.

Hugo Lloris, the Tottenham goalkeeper, was busy, making saves from Wilshere, Welbeck, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ramsey, but the man at the other end, Wojchiech Szczesny, was also required to make significant stops.

Presenting the attire, the traditional ruler said that he often see the president in dark-coloured attire.
Erediauwa congratulated the president for getting his party’s endorsement for second term.
Earlier, the president had told the monarch that he was in Benin to attend the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South sensitisation and unity rally.
President Jonathan who thanked the traditional ruler for the gift, promised to return to the palace when the campaign for his re-election begins. (NAN)

My marriage was full of lies – Uche

Fair-skinned Nollywood damsel, Uche Ogbodo, who has just returned from the United States after the delivery of her baby girl, is no stranger to controversies.
ShowtimecelebrityThe current one rocking her boat is about her failed marriage to ex-Nigerian footballer, Ato Ubby.
While some say she dumped the man because he had a brain tumour, others accused the actress of marrying the hapless footballer only for money.
But Uche is back and ready to tell her own side of the story about her marriage and other issues:
What have you been up to since you came back?
It’s just two weeks that I came back. I haven’t really been up to anything. I’m still new, so I’m still trying to weigh the current and know where to land
Don’t you want to be an actress any longer?
I have always been an actress. I didn’t quit. I was just pregnant and pregnancy is like a curse. It took me a while, but now I’m out of that. I need to re-organise myself and get back to my work
Did you do any movie after your Turning Point premiere?
Turning Point is not my movie, my friend produced the movie and I only went to support it during the premier
What movies have you done recently?
I’ve done a lot of movies; I did Festac Town for iROKOtv, I did Raging Passion, Sacrifice for Marriage, and I did a lot of other movies even while I was pregnant.
Have you left your husband for real?
The marriage didn’t work out.
Was it really a marriage?
Showtimecelebrity
It was a marriage but we didn’t do any wedding. We didn’t do any court marriage or church wedding. We did nothing. We didn’t even do traditional marriage but in my culture, there are many processes to getting married and I did a few of those, so you can say I was married. In Igbo land, there are rites you adhere to before you can say this is my wife and I did a couple of them.
Why did you do the rites in secret?
You cannot do rites openly; it’s just a family thing, family members only. It’s not a traditional wedding. If I had done traditional wedding, I would definitely invite people. If I had done a white wedding, I would have invited people. If I had done a court marriage, I would still have invited people but it was just rites. I didn’t do anything the public needed to know, so you can’t say I did any marriage in secret.
What really made you leave your husband?
My marriage was full of   lies. I cannot tell you in detail what those lies were, if that’s what you’re trying to make me do but it was based on lies. It’s a pity it didn’t work out. I didn’t go into the marriage to crash it. I wanted a family; I wanted a loving home and a loving husband. That was why I went into it in the first place but as nature would have it, I didn’t get any of those. I still thank God my head is intact
Did he cheat on you? What exactly did he do?
No, it’s not about women. Like I always say, you cannot build a home on sinking sand. You need to build a home on a rock. What I mean is that a marriage built on deceit and lies is no marriage at all. If you want a solid marriage, it must be built on honesty and trustworthiness. If not, it’s definitely going to crash. If it doesn’t crash today, it will crash tomorrow, so the lies are my reasons.
When did you discover he was lying to you?
Well, it was good while it lasted; he was a good man to me. I felt all I saw was all I was supposed to see but later when one thing led to another and things started unfolding. I started finding out that everything was not what it seemed. Every relationship, you have problems in-between, there is no relationship that just goes on smoothly.
In the process of friendship and dating, we had issues that we resolved but when we took it to the next level we just couldn’t hold it together. There are things you can hide as friends but as married couple it is impossible because so many other things like families are involved.
As his girlfriend some things that were hidden were revealed when I became his wife. What happened between me and my husband is between me and my husband. We caused it, both of us caused it.
For how long were you guys together?
The marriage lasted barely a month before we started having issues. We were having issues before I found out I was pregnant.
Are you planning to raise your child as a single mother?
When I don’t have a husband, I’m raising her alone. I can’t throw my child away. It’s not her fault that the marriage didn’t work out, it’s not her fault that I got pregnant, it’s not her fault that we didn’t take our marriage seriously, so I’m going to raise her no matter what happens.
How old is she now?
She’s a month and two weeks now
What attracted you to your husband before you married him?
I saw something in him that nobody had ever seen. I saw a man that was a good man inside his heart. It’s not like when you’re looking at him everything is perfect but I saw that deep down somewhere, there’s a good man. Without the influence of society, he would have been different. I blame it on society and I blame it on him. He allowed things to influence but he was born a good man and I thought I could bring that goodness out in him. I thought that I could change something and make it better.   I tried but it didn’t work out.
Was it completely his fault that your marriage crashed?
It’s our fault. We shouldn’t have allowed our marriage to crash. I wouldn’t know my mistakes; he would tell you my mistakes. Maybe I was a little too much to handle, maybe that’s why but I wouldn’t know until he tells you his own side of the story.
Some people were saying you got into the marriage because of money?
I didn’t get into the marriage because of money in the first place. I got into the marriage because I wanted to be married and because I saw something in him that I felt would work out for me later in life. I didn’t go into it because of money; there were no millions to spend so it wasn’t about money. I don’t care what people say. What matters is the truth and I try to be very straightforward when I deal with people. So, it wasn’t about money because there was none
Others are saying you left him because of his brain tumor?
He doesn’t have brain tumor. He was sick at the time, he had issues but his sickness is not the reason why our marriage crashed. Money was not the issue either.   I would definitely know about his health status before I would marry a man. I knew what I was going into, so how could I just leave a man because he had a brain tumor? It’s funny
You said he didn’t have a brain tumor, what was really wrong with him?
I cannot tell you, he would tell you. He was sick, he was treated but it had nothing to do with the brain. He had surgery but it was  not brain tumor, it was not cancer, he was just sick and I thank God that he’s alive. I don’t know why people just wake up and conclude things out of the blue; you don’t know these people from Adam, you just read about people and then you go and comment rubbish. You write rubbish to tear people’s lives apart even when you know nothing about their issues.
Is he still in hospital?
He’s not in hospital; he has never been in the hospital. I don’t know why that picture came up, that picture you saw online was taken like last year December
Was your husband with you when you were pregnant?
No, he wasn’t. We were having issues, we weren’t together. He didn’t see me pregnant for one day
If you’re going to marry again, what would you do differently to make it work out?
I’m only going to keep praying to God to give me someone who wouldn’t lie to me, someone that would be plain, very plain to me.
Are you still planning to marry again?
I’ve left the door open. I’m not going to close the door of marriage because one marriage didn’t work. The door is wide open. When I find someone that I’m going to be happy with but I wouldn’t want another experience where my marriage crashes because once beaten twice shy. So I’m going to take my time now and dig deep
You said you were going to take on more daring roles back then?
Of course, I’m going to take on more daring roles, that’s my career and I’m only going to keep improving myself.
Can you have sex on screen?
As an actress, there’s nothing I cannot do.
Can you do a lesbian scene?
There’s nothing I can’t do in a movie, once it’s a movie. But in real life I’m not a lesbian, so, don’t get it twisted. That’s why I’m an actress, its make-believe, it’s not who I am. I’m only going to do my career the way I’m supposed to do it and it puts food on my table
Are you shooting any movie soon?
I’m shooting a movie but it’s not in Nigeria, it’s in Europe. I’ll be travelling any moment from now. The Nigerian version will be shot down here as well but I’m going to shoot the European part any moment from now. I start filming in about three weeks or less.
